Poland, the Czech and the Voyage (Helmi and Lassi)

We left Riga in the morning. The journey to our hostel in the vicinity of Lomza took most of the day and we arrived there in the afternoon. Our hostel was pretty comfortable although some of us had some unpleasant surprises in the rooms. Everybody went for a walk to check out the hills and the remains of some old fortifications that were near our hostel. We had an evening meal with the whole group later in the evening.
Our group headed to Krakow the next morning. One of the highlights of the city was the beautiful old town, where you could literally see the history. This got emphasised well, because coincidentally our visit in Poland was right at the beginning of May. The 3rd of May is the day of the Polish constitution, and to commemorate this, there were numerous parades going on.The Wawel Castle was an incredible sight with the numerous uniformed soldiers, many wearing traditional gear instead of their modern equipment. Public transport in Krakow was convenient, because the local trams were pretty easy to use, even for people not accustomed to such things normally.

Our visit to Auschwitz the next day was one of the most interesting experiences during our trip. It made us think about how cruel people can be. The effect on everyone was quite palpable, because unlike most of the trip, there were actually some moments of silence on our tour bus. The weather was rainy during our visit, so it matched the atmosphere of our surroundings.

Our next destination was Prague. We spent much of the following day getting there. Its sheer size was a notable difference, it was unlike anything that we had encountered before on our trip. Being an old city, there were many interesting things for tourists to see. For example, the Charles Bridge and the historic centre were interesting landmarks.

The last part of our Eurotour was a boat trip from Travemünde to Helsinki. There obviously wasn’t much to do on a ship, we took it easy and ate well, for the food was definitely A-class. There was also a sauna. This was a highlight for many, as sauna was one of the rare things that most of us missed while on the tour. A perfect place for tired travellers.
